Self Reflection
Hi, I am Anna Gomez. Today I am going to show you my portfolio. These are the things that we did in every subject. Two things I am good at are doing my homework and handing it in on time. Two things I need to improve on are pay attention more to my teacher while he/she is teaching and focusing more on my work and using my time wisely when our teacher gives us time in class instead of talking to my friends.
My goals for the next 6 weeks of school are being serious to what I am doing and be more organize to prepare for the final exam. I would also like to improve my tests and quizzes by studying before the test/quiz. Also ask more questions if I don't understand something.

The portfolio you made indicates that you are enjoying what you have learned in school by choosing appropriate themes (such as the current tragedy that happened in Japan) where you can easily relate by giving examples and how it affected you as a student and a concerned individual. Also, great job on presenting the questions and showing solutions by means of technology (such as informative videos and colorful artworks) which helped a lot in making your study habits more fun and interesting.

In the last 6 weeks of school I will help you reach your goals by looking after your work and encouraging you to ask questions for the topics you are unclear of and rewarding you as well for your tough struggle in accomplishing your goals.

Math

Term 1 Reflection

In grade 8 term 1 we learned about rate, ratio, proportion, square roots, square numbers, Pythagoras. On our first math class we learned about problem solving, which includes simple sentence, outrageous answers and math information. We learned problem solving because for the rest of our math learning we will be using simple sentence and math information. In term 1 we did a Sesame Street video based on what we learned about rate, ratio, proportion and we had a lot of fun. Each student is assigned to do a blog and others have to comment on it. Doing a blog is really fun, you get to share your work with other people. Blogger help me and other students do their work if they don’t get something. Days before our test and quizzes we do homework book and textbook work to practice. I have a lot of goals for the next term. I would like to improve my test scores, and do all my homework. I will also ask questions if I don’t understand something. I will also listen to class discussions. Next term I am looking forward to learn more about math and maybe about algebra.

Term 2 reflection

This term was a little bit hard for me. We learned about Converting Percent, surface area and volume. I did well on some of my quizzes in surface area and I also did well on getting my blog work done. I kind of struggled converting percents into decimals into fraction because it was hard for me to understand. Next term I will do all my homework and study everyday. I will also try to participate more in class discussions instead of talking to my friends and ask questions if I don't understand something. I learned a lot this term, like finding the volume of cylinder, rectangular prism and triangular prism. I am looking forward to learning algebra this term.

Grade Eight Student Assignment- Portfolio Reflection
Task/intent/criteria
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for learning practices. The learning process had followed the three key components:
Subject: English Language Arts
Topic: Short Story- “Thank you Ma’am” by Langston Hughes
Task: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I was required to compose a friendly letter using information from a short story.
Intent: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are several reasons I am doing this writing assignment. First I learned the elements of a short story. Next, we learned the components to write in a friendly letter format. Then, we applied specific story details and wrote in the first person as if we were a character from the short story.

Criteria: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
- Use proper friendly letter format referring to letter frame
- Compose the rough copy letter using specific details from the short story and write the letter from the perspective of one of the main characters in the story.
- Remember to use appropriate tone and audience for the letter
- Complete all steps in the writing process as set out in the assignment directions.
Next steps: Upon completion of this assignment I can now...
- I can now identify elements of a short story.

Dear Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones,

Ma’am, I am very sorry for trying to snatch your purse, I was out of my mind that night. I really want money to buy new suede shoes, and I saw you walking alone so I tried taking your pocketbook.

Ma’am, I am very thankful for taking me to your house and for the lima beans, ham, cocoa and the ten cent cake. Your actions showed me that you’re really nice. You gave me 10 dollars even though I did something bad to you and you trusted me. Not a lot of woman will treat me the way you did. Thank you for making me look presentable for making me wash my face, for the life lesson and for understanding my situation. That night you changed my life.

Again Ma’am, I am really.... really sorry. I am very thankful for everything you did to me. When I was going out your door I wasn’t able to say anything but “Thank you.” I don’t know if these words are enough to thank you for everything you did to me... Again I’m sorry.

Yours truly,
Roger

Digestive System

Our digestive System is important because it brakes down foods that we eat into small pieces so our body can use them to build nourish cells and to provide energy. This process starts in our mouth and ends in our rectum. This works when food is chewed and mixed with saliva, the salivary enzyme help convert food into simpler particles which passed to the large intestine or colon, and the digestion takes place in the large intestine and the intestinal wall absorbs the useful nutrients. The solid waste and indigestible food particles are excreted by bowel movement.
7 Parts:
Mouth- this is where the digestion begins, chewing breaks the food into small pieces which is easier to digest.
Esophagus- is a soft tube and everything we eat goes through this.
Liver- Our liver has different functions but the main function when it comes to digestive system is to process the nutrients that were absorbed by our small intestine,
Stomach- our stomach is like a storage system in our body that can keep a large meal for a long time.
Pancreas- this is the organ that lies behind the stomach that help produce pancreatic juice, this helps neutralize or weaken the acid inside the stomach.
Gallbladder- its a small muscular sac that is attached beneath our liver
Anus- this is the last part of the digestive process. Foods that we ate will be excreted by bowel movement.

We were asked to go in groups and make a difference to other peoples lives.
My group chose Japan Devastation Relief as our topic. Our big questions are;
Explain the damages caused by the earthquake/tsunami in Japan and how did this affect the country of Japan?
What cities in Japan got affected the most by the earthquake/tsunami and how did it affect these cities?
Explain how you feel about the tragedy in Japan and how can you relate to this?
Is it possible for the Japan earthquake to cause a tsunami and earthquake to its neighbouring countries? Explain
What are the signs before the earthquake happened and what are the safety precautions that you have to do before, during and after the earthquake?
I have learned a lot of things that happened in Japan. A 9.0 megathrust earthquake hit the country of Japan last March 11, 2011 followed by a tsunami which caused flooding, landslides, fires, building infrastructure damage and nuclear incidents. Thousand of people were affected by this tragedy including houses, companies, buildings and plants. This also caused severe damages to roads, railways, dam collapsed and fires in many areas. Before the earthquake occured first came a roar and rumble of the temblor, shaking skyscrapers, toppling furniture and buckling highways. The earthquake/tsunami also damaged few of the country's 52 Nuclear Power plants. Nuclear Plants that was nearer to the epicenter of the quake, especially the power plant at Fukushima I. Government ordered thousands of residents near a nuclear power plant in onahoma city to evacuate due to fear of radioactive leakage.
